Renewing a 2 year driving license for a 5 year license in Phuket

I applied for a 2 year license 2 years ago and it was time to renew.

I needed two copies as I renewed for both bike and car:

  • Passport original with copies of the main page and a copy of the visa expiration stamp (if you received an extension of the stamp while waiting in line, make new copies with the dates of the visa)
  • Health certificate
  • Workpermit (copies of the main page and WP page)
  • Photo of the license, which is expiring

I signed up at the end of March, gave a receipt for the end of April, but since I arrived after 10 of May worried, but the Thais said ok, no problem, within 1 month after the appointed date come and there will be no problems.

Also to the receipt attached a link to QR which leads to registration and viewing of the movie, which should be seen. The movie itself lasts an hour, during which 4 times windows pop up where you need to tap what you are watching, and 3 times a window with questions in English.
After viewing it gives QR which must be saved.

With a full package of documents and saved QR I went to Phuket DLT (https://maps.app.goo.gl/9Zc4oEkn48hftWpk6) to renew my license. I arrived, went through the document check, then sent to counter 5, where there was already a queue and took a test for reaction and traffic light color. Passed the test, and then told to wait in line at counter 3, there had to wait longer, here note that if your turn may fall under the long wait closer to 12:00, you may be told to come at 1:00 in the afternoon. I would recommend not showing off and just arrive in the morning before the doors open 08:00.

After checking my documents and paying the fee of 255+505 baht + 20 baht for 2 plastic license holders, I got my license until Feb 7, 2030. And within half an hour on the DLT QR LICENCE app (https://www.bangkokbiznews.com/news/984431) the license was renewed too.

It took about 3-4 hours for everything. It’s really simple. But keep in mind that this is the experience with EP and NON-B visa. With student visas they will ask for a residency certificate, but it is not a fact that they will give it for 5 years, most likely for 2 years. I have no experience with other long visas.
